The Waterloo Engineering Faculty is in the process of raising funds for the new Engineering 7 building set to start construction in October 2015. The Dean of Engineering Pearl Sullivan has requested a student donation to the building of one million dollars which will give the students naming rights and input into to a 288 square meter quiet student study space as well as show support for the student focused design of the building. More information about the proposed building can be found here: https://uwaterloo.ca/news/news/university-waterloo-approves-88-million-engineering-7
A referendum is being run to allow students to decide if they see merit in implementing the donation proposed by the Dean of Engineering. If the majority of students vote yes in this referendum, one million dollars will be raised through an optional fee of $25 dollars per term which will start once the building is complete and students are using the space.
The Engineering Society has put the question to students:
“Are you in favour of a one million dollar student donation to the building of Engineering 7 paid through an optional fee of $25 dollars per student per term to be collected starting once the building is open and continuing until the one million dollar contribution has been fully paid, with any collected surplus acquired after the final payment has been made going towards furnishing the undergraduate student spaces in the building?”
Each on-term engineering student will receive a link to vote in the referendum on March 11th and voting will remain open until 6pm on March 14th.
