WEEF

Location: E5, second floor (near the gear lab)

“What is WEEF?” you may ask! Well, the most important thing to know is that WEEF IS GOOD!

The Waterloo Engineering Endowment Foundation (WEEF) was founded in 1990 to benefit undergraduate engineering education at the University of Waterloo. Students and departments were frustrated with lacking lab equipment, class materials and resources for student teams and projects, so they did something about it! Starting with a $1 million donation from the Department of Engineering, WEEF has since reached its 20th birthday with nearly $10 million and has become the biggest student-run Endowment Fund in Canada.

The magic of WEEF is that it is constantly growing. WEEF spending each term is based on the amount of interest earned on our principal amount – money from donations. Each term, WEEF’s Funding Council (made up of undergraduate engineers) evaluates proposals and determines where this interest will go, aiming to create the most benefits possible for engineering undergraduates. Benefits include the following:

  • Student Design Center in Engineering 5, used by student teams to build, test and perfect their equipment
  • Computers and Monitors for Undergraduate Labs, used by engineering student body for class, course work, research and design projects
  • Mechanical, Technical, Electrical and Safety Equipment for teams such as Midnight Sun Solar Race Team, UWStart, UW Robotics, Formula SAE, Waterloo Rocketry and  Clean Snowmobile Team
  • Departmental Equipment, such as Distillation Column (Chem), 3-D Printers (Arch), Circuit Hardware (Elec), Linux Cluster Upgrades (Elec & Comp) and many more

WEEF would not be what it is today without YOU. The Voluntary Student Contribution (VSC) is the most significant source of donations to WEEF. This is a voluntary, tax-deductible $75 fee charged each term, which is fully refundable upon request during the first three weeks of the term. As of March 2011, the principal of WEEF is just under $10 million, yielding about $60, 000 dollars per term in new equipment and funding for special projects.
