Hello Wonderful people, I have a quick update for you all about what has been happening in the world of ESSCO! If you have forgotten, ESSCO is the Engineering Student Societies Council of Ontario and is more or less the Ontario EngSoc of EngSoc’s. All of the Engineering schools in Ontario are a member and they facilitate conferences, discussion and a representation.
The ESSCO council is made up of all of the VP-External’s of all of the schools and we meet once a month in teleconference form in order to discuss what ESSCO executive have been up to and anything that needed to be discussed. I (Lisa was there too) attended the February Teleconference on Wednesday February 22 2012 and other then general administrative stuff here is what was discussed.
· Volunteer Opportunities
o Engineering Science and Engineering Day is taking place on Friday May 11th 2012 at Canada’s Wonderland! ESSCO is looking for volunteers who can facilitate many of the events being run on the day, such as a mini roller coaster competition, information stations and anything else that comes up. I sent an email to the mailing list about this opportunity but in case you missed it the details are included below. You have until the end of February to sign up so head here for the registration information: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dER1Si1LbWpRNzdkWlFRTGNhbThrSmc6MQ
o Proper Television is currently casting for a new TV series about makers and will basically have people build incredible things out of whatever is around. They are looking for those people that have the knack for building things! If you or someone you know fits this description then contact Jesse Aitchison from Proper Television at Jesse@propertelevision.com or send me a message and I can forward you the casting document.
· Opportunity to run a professional conference – Every year during the fall term Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) run a student conference revolving around students in engineering and is basically a chance for students to learn and interact with the regulating body of our profession. We need a dedicated team of leaders who are willing to run such a conference(from a school in Ontario, Waterloo is not being forced to do this). The PEO get’s sponsorship going so it is one of the easier conferences to run. If this opportunity spikes your interest, then send me an email and we can have a chat (vpexternal.a@engsoc.uwaterloo.ca).
· OEC Constitution Change – There was a discussion regarding the constitution of the Ontario Engineering Competition and I will do my best to provide the gist of the proposed change. As of right now in order to promote ongoing sponsorship of the competition, OEC offers companies a spot on their board of directors to any company who provides significant sponsorship on a year to year basis. The proposed change would increase the minimum sponsorship from $5000 to $7000 and will also create a new category which allows a group who sponsors a specific award year to year to be included on the board. There are a few partners who are non-profit organizations such as the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) who can’t afford a $7000 sponsorship but provide support and resources throughout the year. If you have more questions about the changes please let me know. It has nothing to do with the rules or regulations of the competition itself, it merely changes how sponsorship and the internal workings of the competition operate.
· We also have a presentation from a representative from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) http://www.theiet.org/ who facilitates an international technical speaking competition. Currently Waterloo does not have a representative in this competition but an information email will be sent out shortly and I will share that with all of you when I get it. In short, we will definitely attempt to get this happening at Waterloo!
That sums up what happened at the ESSCO Teleconference. On the same day just 30 minutes prior to the ESSCO council teleconference, I attended the National Engineering Month Rube Goldberg teleconference which basically provided details about the event and how things will work. Waterloo has been working hard on getting their machine up and running and I will provide more details about its final build and video when they become available! If you have a particular interest in this project please let me know by sending me an email vpexternal.a@engsoc.uwaterloo.ca
That pretty much sums up the details of that meeting and will hopefully give you all an update on what is happening in the world of ESSCO. If you have any further questions about anything you read in this blog, please email me at vpexternal.a@engsoc.uwaterloo.ca
Cheers!!!
Wonderland Details Below!!!
The Engineering Student Societies' Council of Ontario (ESSCO) is looking for individuals to help with Wonderland's annual Math and Physics Day on Friday, May 11th, 2012. We are looking for an event Director to coordinate our volunteers, as well as up to 30 volunteers.
Math and Physics Day is a Wonderland outreach event for grade 5-12 students where teams of students present roller coasters models that they have designed for a GTA-wide competition, as well as learn about the science, mathematics and physics concepts involved in amusement park attractions. This year, Wonderland will also be flying in an engineer from Bolliger and Mabillard, the firm which designed Leviathan and Behemoth, to host the contest and present a lecture.
ESSCO typically sends about 30 volunteers to assist with logistics and be an undergraduate student presence at the event. Volunteers get:
Volunteers are required from 8 am to 2:30 pm on May 11st, 2012. If you are interested in the opportunity, please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dER1Si1LbWpRNzdkWlFRTGNhbThrSmc6MQ. To volunteer, select "volunteer" on the form. If you are interested in taking on a greater leadership role and coordinating our volunteers, select "director" on the form. ESSCO will select one Director and up to 30 volunteers. This is a great opportunity to gain leadership experience and participate in a large high school outreach event.
