Explorations

The Faculty of Engineering hosts the community explorations event annually with support from the engineering society. Explorations is targeted at families with children in the Grades 6 to 8 age group in our local Kitchener-Waterloo community. It brings in the range of 1500 people onto campus for an evening event of displays and presentations meant to educate the community about Engineering and Engineering education. Student volunteers lead tours which take visitors to displays and presentations of student projects, interesting faculty research projects, and various Engineering topics.

Shadow Day

How would you like to be a university student for a day? Attending REAL lectures, checking out the high-tech equipment that UW has to offer, and getting a taste of university life... Shadow Day is an opportunity for high school students to experience a day at university. Participating students will receive hands-on appreciation of Waterloo Engineering by attending real lectures and spending time with current undergraduate engineers.

Please help make Shadow Day a success by encouraging any and all students to attend. This is NOT only a day for students who wish to attend Waterloo, but a day for any students interested in engineering.

You will be involved in a wide range of activities throughout the course of the day. In the morning, each high school student will accompany a university student to attend his/her classes in order to get a first-hand experience of what it's like to be a university student. After lunch, all high school students will be invited to attend a lecture and a 'Question and Answer' session regarding admissions, the co-op program and extracurricular activities. Finally, students will attend a seminar providing detailed information on the engineering program of their interest. (Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Geological, Management, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Nanotechnology, Software, or Systems Design).

National Engineering Week

National Engineering Week (NEW) was inaugurated in 1992 to celebrate Canada's rich engineering heritage, promote engineering as a career choice and remind Canadians of the role engineering plays in their daily lives.

NEW is celebrated annually during the first week of March and traditionally encompasses a wide range of activities and events organized at the national, provincial and local levels. The activities range from pasta bridge building contests, to mall displays on engineering, to school visits and provincial newspaper inserts.

Both Explorations and Bus Push are traditionally held during NEW at Waterloo.

Women in Engineering (WIE)

Women in Engineering is an organization with the goal of increasing awareness of engineering with young women, in order to increase participation at all levels. The faculty has a committee called the Women in Engineering Committee that organize events and initiatives to help further this goal. Students are represented on this committee by the WIE Directors. For more information about the committee, please visit their website.

The Women in Engineering Committee and the Women in Engineering Directors occasionally organize events to allow networking between female students and professors. These events can take the form of guest speakers, or just simple mixer type events. Some events that have been run in the past are: yoga, tea party, and movie night.
