Academic events usually take the form of the three events listed below. These events can take the form of an academic service such as Resume Critiques, or the form of a volunteer to help event. Most of these events typically look for volunteers to help with tasks that require more human resources than our directors can provide (such as stuffing, reading, or critiquing). If you care about helping younger years improve their resumes, or ensuring that professors get feedback to improve their skills, then please volunteer at one of these events. We normally reward our volunteers with dinner to thank them for their time.
Each term in every course each student gets to opportunity to critique both the course and the professor through course critiques. These critiques do matter since it is currently the only method used to assess the teaching ability of a professor.
Course critiques generally runs two events per term. One to stuff the course critique packages, and one to filter them before returning them to the Dean's Office. At the stuffing party we needs lots of help to get the correct amount of critique forms into envelopes so that we can distribute them to professors to bring to class, volunteers get rewarded with free dinner! At the reading party volunteers get to skim through the critiques to ensure that the vulgar comments are removed and only constructive criticism goes to the professor. Reading the comments on course critiques can certainly be very funny, and of course, volunteers get free dinner!
Resume critiques has proven to be a popular event in the past, especially for first year students. Students have the opportunity to have their resume critiqued by an upper year student who has received training from CECS, or from a director that has training from CECS. The event usually takes place once or twice during the week before first round applications (Week 2), then once more before continuous round (Week 8). It is very useful to have someone look at your resume before you use it to apply to jobs on Jobmine. Getting interviews is all about how you market yourself and your skills! Space is limited, and volunteers can only spend so much time on each person due to the volume of people that usually attend. It would be beneficial to review this document from Career Services before attending.
Resume critiques requires upper year volunteers every term to help critique the resumes of the hundreds of students that show up (yes hundreds!). Don't worry if you don't know how to critique, the directors have received training from CECS and will teach you how to critique before the session starts. Volunteers usually receive free dinner, and much love from the directors.
We also run Academic Rep Meetings in order to facilitate mentoring from more experienced reps to younger ones, as well as gather input on academic issues to help the VP Education better represent student views at the meetings they attend on the behalf of Undergrads.
These meetings typically happen three times each term, and we encourage all academic reps to attend. If you are an academic rep and have not received an invitation, please email the VP Education to ensure that you are on the mailing list for academic reps.
