The main responsibility of the academic rep is to act as a liaison between the class and professor on academic issues. The student representatives are asked to survey their class about the general view of the class in all courses and collect feedback on any academic issues that may arise. Then, academic reps present these findings at divisional/departmental meetings. These meetings are for the student representatives and the instructors to meet informally once or more per term to discuss how everything is progressing with each course (eg. rooms, noise, attendance, T.A.’s, tutorials, workload, etc.) Student representatives are still encouraged to address any of their concerns directly with the instructors or T.A.’s as issues arise throughout the term and not necessarily wait for these meetings.
The Engineering Society also has an Academic Class Representative Advisor who acts as a resource for the individual class representatives by providing faculty, industry and engineering society contacts to assist the academic class representatives in their duties. The Academic Class Representative Advisor also plans meetings to keep the individual classes updated on changes to the curriculum, university policies, job industry updates and the co-operative work between the UW Engineering Society and the UW Faculty of Engineering.
